The best NOAA weather alert radios
NOAA weather radios that sound an alarm for warnings in your county.
Updated October 2, 2026
A weather alert radio stands watch on the NOAA weather band and sounds when a warning comes in. SAME county coding decides how often that happens. Program your own counties and it stays quiet for warnings elsewhere. Many radios here also carry the Public Alert mark.
Then weigh alert style and power. Most radios on this list offer a siren plus a voice alert or a display-only mode. Several add a jack for a strobe light or bed shaker. Battery backup keeps it listening when the power goes out. Most here use AA cells.

Frequently asked questions
How does a weather alert radio work?
The radio sits on one of the seven NOAA weather channels and waits in standby. When an alert comes in it sounds a siren or a voice message or lights up the display. With SAME you program your county codes and the radio reacts only to alerts for those counties. Battery backup keeps it listening when the power goes out.
What is a SAME weather radio?
A SAME weather radio lets you enter county codes and then reacts only to alerts for those counties. The radios on this shortlist store 23 to 26 codes. Public Alert certified models like the Midland WR400 pair SAME with a siren or voice alert. A radio without SAME cannot filter alerts by county. Portable models like the Midland ER10VP and the C.Crane CC Pocket alert without that filter.
When does a weather radio go off?
A SAME radio goes off when the weather service issues an alert for one of your programmed counties. Many radios here recognize 60 to 80 or more alert types. Warning, Watch and Advisory levels show on color coded lights. On the yesiwtc WR321 each of those tiers can be switched on or off. The Reecom R-1650D and R-1630C can mute the siren for up to 48 chosen events.
Is a weather radio AM or FM?
NOAA weather broadcasts are not on the AM or FM dial. They use their own weather band with seven channels and every radio here receives it. Several models add AM and FM for everyday listening such as the Midland WR400 and the Reecom R-1650D. Others cover the weather band only. The Midland WR120B and the Reecom R-200 are two examples.
